AKA

A choreographic piece for a giant puppet

Our puppets first learned to walk — simply to walk — and we found it extraordinary to watch these immense silhouettes move, to appreciate their slowness and their lightness. Then they ran, they jumped, they were able to sit, lie down, kneel, curl up on themselves…

Offering our puppets ever more possibilities to express themselves through a multiplicity of movements has been at the heart of our work for the past 12 years. But could they dance?

AKA stands 8 meters tall. She embodies an adult woman with an athletic silhouette. Supported by a crane, each of her limbs is animated by a puppeteer, combining rod-puppet and string-puppet techniques.

The visible action of the puppeteers is an integral part of the performance: seven individuals becoming one, finding the same breath, the same energy, in order to transmit it to the puppet. Together, they deliver an extraordinary physical performance.

AKA is a grounded and vibrant dance, where lightness becomes power, where power turns into trance, and where trance is pierced by moments of extreme slowness.
